if you haven’t noticed already, i’ll just come out and say it…i’m a huge fan of exclamation points. in fact, i always have to edit my use of them because i find that i could pretty much end every sentence i write with one. i never thought much about it until i read the editor’s letter from real simple last month and she spoke about how she’s a fan and finds it energizing. i couldn’t agree more! i think it’s because i write the way i talk – and i’m pretty animated when i talk – so how best to get that across through writing? lots of exclamation points!! i mean what would you rather do? ”clean the house” or “clean the house!” i rest my case.
are you an exclamation point user? or in my case, an over-user?!
from the editor’s letter: ”sometimes i think americans must have invented the exclamation mark-it’s their state of mind”.
[cool etsy finds, clockwise from top left: small vintage wood type exclamation points from monki vintage; mosaic tiles from jemmdee; sterling silver necklace from linden leaf studio; vintage glass nut dish from sosovintage; monster exclamation print from bo & friends]
i love the necklace ! so cute!
xo Alison
total over-user here!!
Guilty as charged: I definitely overuse exclamation points. Sometimes, I use periods just so every single sentence doesn’t end with an exclamation point. And then it looks weird and I give in and use the exclamation point. Now, the real mystery is how I just wrote three sentences and didn’t use a single one! There, that feels so much better! Love these finds, Piper!
I love exclamation points!!! See, how are people supposed to know you are jumping up and down with joy.
I really like them too. Unfortunately that key on my laptop busted off a few months ago and I can longer make them. Coy and pasting is tedious, and [ex.pt.] just doesn’t have the same effect. (I love the pottery pieces[ex.pt.])
i thought those tiles were peanut brittle, LOL! i love exclamation points, i think i overuse them though!!!!!!!!
Hahaha!!! I am definitely an exclamation point use, almost to a fault! I always enjoy your quirky finds. The first one is my fave!! They would make great bookends, don’t you think?
woo hoo!! i’m not the only one. i’ll write sentences without exclamation points…and it just feels plain weird. i give up – i’m an exclamation point user!!!!
That is too funny!! I don’t think I could survive without my exclamation point key. I love how you’re getting around it – adds a fun take on it
OHHHHH!! I’m a major (!) over user!!
Love this post…
twitter and comments for me, I overuse it all the time and try and stop myself. I can’t help it. I’m trying to convey my enthusiasm!!!!!!!!!!
Oh yeah, exclamation over user right here! I go over my posts and take some out, and then I feel like it doesn’t sound right, but I leave them out because I know you aren’t “supposed” to use so many. And I know what you mean I write how I speak and when I really like something I really like it!!!!!!
Love these cute exclamation finds!
It totally is a state of mind! This Tigger blogger always uses exclamation points – they’re so much better THAN ALL CAPS!
yep i give it a bit of a thrashing too!!
love the letterpress collection, big time!
over user here!!!! cannot live without exclamation points!!! hahahaha!!! we are all busted here!
i’m a recovering exclamation point user, though sometimes, i still carried away.
!!!
I love what the editor said–so true! And yes, guilty as charged … exclamation points and smiley faces–they get me every time!!!
I am definitely an ! over-user, hee hee!!!
I have to edit and take them out all the time too. (just did)
LOVE that necklace, it totally cracks me!
Now I’m off to read the article at real simple, but not before one last word:
!!!!
because a bunch of !’s together makes a word, right? right!
I love them too and tend to over use them in my writing but they’re so easy to use, they’re great! (See what I mean?)
