// map it…how to market creatively (& not spend a fortune!)

i have to tell you that i’m really excited to be writing this “map it” series for creative (and aspiring) biz owners!  it’s become a passion of mine to help artists on the business side of things. (the first step was getting the pop-up shop up & running- now it’s on to getting you answers & tips!)  you’ll be seeing lots more coming on ways to merchandise & promote your work and business.  marketing is one of those areas that a lot of people want to run & hide when thinking about!  i want to help make it easier on you!

this week’s map it question comes from ashley over at the big white farmhouse.  she asked the following:

“my question is about marketing. do you have any low-cost ways to market creatively?”

great question, right?!  unfortunately i don’t think there’s a “one size fits all” solution.  but i do think there are some definite things to have on your marketing checklist.  here’s a great checklist from create + connect project to use.

now let’s get creative!  first steps first…think about your customer.  most of us hate being “sold” to…probably why so many dislike the act of marketing.  so start by only doing marketing steps that you would enjoy doing or being a part of.  here are a few ideas to get you started:

marketing becomes much easier if you enjoy it too!  keep finding ways to engage with your customers.  it can be tricky when you’re online but the more that your customers see you responding and recognizing them, they’ll respond in kind!

thanks ashley for the question!  hope that gets you started!

keep those questions coming!  if you want to be featured and have specifics given for your own business,  feel free to leave a comment or email me or send up a smoke signal – we’ve got you covered! – piper

// map it…who’s your ideal customer?

you ready for a new weekly column that’s all about helping you??  3 cheers if you said YES because that’s what i’m kicking off today!  every week, i get emails asking me biz questions…so i thought it would be cool to answer some of the most frequently asked questions and give specific examples and/or steps.  if there’s one thing i can’t stand, it’s not having a checklist, steps & actions to take…oh, and VISUALS!

that’s my mission – to help you navigate the twisty, turny road of entrepreneurship!  think of it like your biz road map!

i’ve asked my intern, mariah, to lend a hand on some of these posts since she’s an award-winning graphic designer, marketer AND she just co-founded the create + connect project - a program that helps creative entrepreneurs turn their passion into profit.  (i’m excited to be a part of this program – i’ll be doing a live call at the end of it – check it out, this 8 week class kicks off 6/6!)

we’re kicking the series off with an important, yet somehow incredibly tough question…who is your ideal customer?
take it away, mariah!

10 Questions to Ask About Your Ideal Customer
One of the first steps to take when you decide to start your own business is to figure out who you want your customer to be in an ideal situation – who exactly would you like to work with?

This is a great thing to figure out early on because you can learn to market your products to the exactly right people from the start, saving you months or years of dealing with customers that aren’t fun to work with.

You’ll want to get to know everything about this person and you’ll need to get inside their mind and dig deep into what they think and feel.

Here are 10 key questions to ask yourself about your ideal customer (Use this worksheet we’ve provided to write your answers on):

  1. What are their demographics? (Location, Age, Gender, Income, Family Life)
  2. What are their likes/dislikes?
  3. What are their hobbies?
  4. What are their core values?
  5. What are their favorite blogs or websites?
  6. What conferences do they attend?
  7. What fears do they have about your product or service?
  8. What would they need to hand a dream experience with you?
  9. Who influences their decisions? (Family/Celebs/Mentors)
  10. What words describe their style?

Once you get to know your ideal customer in depth, you’ll be able to develop marketing messages that speak directly to them, and you’ll have happier customers that you’re excited to work with.

piper says:  it’s okay to start with yourself but it helps if you can even think of a friend that would be your ideal customer.  start there & write down all the things about her.  and it really does help if you name her!

if you have questions you want answered, feel free to leave a comment or email me or send up a smoke signal – we’ve got you covered :)

{from blog to shop}

can i just tell you guys how excited i was when i found out that not only was i speaking at alt summit but that my panel was going to be all about going from blog to shop.  i can literally talk for days on this subject & lately i’ve started to realize that one of the things i love doing most is helping others get their shop up & running – um, win-win!!

but then the schedule came out…our panel was at the same time as “growing your readership” (with no other than jordan from oh happy day, nicole from making it lovely, kelly from design crush & maggie from mighty girl and the panel “how to create great diy tutorials” with one of my fave bloggers ez from creature comforts not to mention megan from not martha.  um, what??  great, now our panel is going to be like a ghost town with tumbleweed blowing by!)

but surprise, surprise…people showed up!  and not just people…lots of people who have started an online business or store!  perfect, that’s exactly who we wanted to talk to!!  (okay, so it wasn’t 100′s of people but when you’re going up against “growing your readership” i think even having 5 people at your panel counts as success :)

amy, susan and i decided that we wanted our panel to be more about the people attending and addressing their questions and concerns. so we left lots of time at the end of our panel for Q&A and boy are we glad we did!  the questions kept coming from some pretty amazing and awesome folks who have started their own stores or biz and there was a collaborative feel to answering them  - we could all speak from our own experience…including people attending the panel!

so here’s a couple things i wanted to share from our panel…

next week i’ll share with you all some of the questions we got – great discussions over those!!

and if you’re really, really interested in watching the whole panel, i’ll have a link soon!

**you need a vision for your business.  start with what you want your life to be like and don’t forget to DREAM BIG!  this is the fun, dreaming stage and nothing is off the table!**

**we decided we wanted to share the highs of owning a store…as well as the lows.  all of the things you battle with on a daily basis.  it’s important to keep it real and know the challenges.  i think online especially we’re all putting our best foot forward so it can seem like it’s just easy & fun to own a store and be successful at it.  the reality is that it’s a lot of painstaking work AND can be very scary not getting a steady paycheck or knowing if your business will ever turn a profit.  we stressed the importance of having a support system and perseverance, perseverance, perseverance!!  (did i mention perseverance?)**

**ahhh, getting noticed.  it’s something we all want the magic bullet answer to…how do i get noticed?  if only there was a magic bullet answer!!  we talked about how much we rely on our little support systems.  whether it’s family, friends, biz gal groups, bloggy friends – those connections keep you grounded and more importantly sane!  and can also lead to helping you or your store get noticed – whether through introductions or friends spreading the word.  we also stressed how important it is to figure out how you want to be noticed – if you want to get in a certain magazine, then start by commenting or starting convos with people on that magazine.  think about how you can help them…and chances are, it’ll end up helping you!**

{it’s here…grand opening day!!}

rustic glamour

it’s finally here!!  the store website goes live early afternoon today…can we all say woo hoo!!  so many lovely goodies – i really don’t think i’m ready to part with them!!  i’ll have a post this week on what’s now on my obsession wish list!  i’ll also be introducing some new features to the blog and freshening up the look of the blog…more to come on that!!

i hope you all enjoy the site – i’ve truly poured all my love and passion (and a lot of work!) into this.  the store is based around the idea of surrounding yourself with things you love and shaking up the everyday (goes back to the shake it up series!!)  lots of beautiful items that will brighten your room, add that cool touch or just make you smile!  and more than that, it’s meant for you  - so please tell me what you like, what you don’t like, what you’d love to see – you know i would LOVE to hear what you think!!

i’m waiting on pins + needles over here…

(p.s. i think i know how i want to decorate for thanksgiving now!! i’m in love with the above runner & trays!)

{rainy days + mondays}

gray and yellow

it’s another rainy day here.  makes it much easier to stay inside and work – although i’m constantly tempted to cuddle under a cozy throw with a good book instead!  (although right now i’m going through a dry spell with books – can’t seem to find one that grabs my attention – any recommendations?)

you won’t hear this very often from me but…monday can’t get here soon enough!  the anticipation is killing me.  i’m busy crossing my T’s and dotting my I’s and because I’m a bit crazy, going back and doing it again.  as of monday, you won’t have to hear me go on and on about the store opening…it’ll finally BE open!

so i thought i’d share some grey + yellow inspiration…my fave color combo and the colors for the one sydney road store.  (you guessed it…you’ll see lots of grey + yellow goodies in the store!)

have a wonderful halloween weekend everyone!  are you dressing up?  passing out candy?

{starting an online boutique}

So yesterday was a huge day for me. I met with an attorney to set up my online boutique. It’s exciting, terrifying and overwhelming all at once. It’s hard to believe that after all these years I could be close to my dream. Of course this is just one step in many, many, many…

The funny thing is that I feel like one of the hardest steps was picking a name!

Coming up with a name for your business is subjective and therefore feels impossible. Partly this is because everytime you come up with the BEST idea for a name….you find out it’s already in use. This has happened to me too many times to mention. Pretty much it seems that every word in the dictionary is already being used for a business!

So I decided on something that would have meaning to me. And since it was during our trip of a lifetime this year to Australia that I realized that:

a.) I had been dreaming of opening my own store for years and had yet to do it and decided it was time to take the leap (isn’t it great how vacation makes you feel like anything is possible!)

b.) australia is amazing – we were ready to move to sydney in a heartbeat if only it wasn’t so far away from family & friends.

c.) sydney is full of amazing boutiques – totally inspiring.

a name is born…one sydney road

would love to hear from others on how they picked a name for their blog/store/business!

if you are at the beginning stages of starting an online boutique (or just dreaming), here are some great sites to get you started:

ladies who launch
startup nation
entrepreneur.com
small business administration

books for inspiration:

e-myth revisited by michael gerber
roadtrip nation by mike marriner
startup nation by jeff sloan & richard sloan
escape from cubicle nation by pamela slim
the tipping point by malcolm gladwell

…and for complete inspiration & fun:  a trip to the beach by melinda & robert blanchard   (about a couple that leaves their life in the U.S. to start a restaurant on a tropical island)

{spring in winter!}

While reading all my favorite blogs this morning, I came across a great new blog called Spring.  (thanks goes to decor8 for blogging about it!).  Four creative women entrepreneurs have gotten together to offer inspiration to other like minded folks via hour-long video episodes & discussions.   (Perfect for me as I embark on opening my own online boutique – I can use all the inspiration I can get!)  What a great idea!!

From their website:

Through lively conversation with four creative and passionate individuals, Spring explores designing a life you love from very unique perspectives. It inspires creative entrepreneurs to focus on the journey rather than on the final destination alone”
