// in a nutshell

i thought it would be fun to do a little wrap up of the paris shop – i can’t believe how fast it went!!  i hope you all have been enjoying the trip, so to speak!  i got the idea to do this summary after i noticed how many of the shopkeeps have been to paris & how many of them have “travel cross country” on their bucket list!  (marcus thought it was especially funny that the only 2 shopkeeps that haven’t been to paris yet are the 2 clevelanders…me & judy!!  c’est la vie!)

thanks to the awesomely cool paris shopkeeps for being a part of this pop-up shop – they’ve all been wonderful to get to know & work with!  and thanks to lillian for supplying the beautiful paris photos – as you can tell, i had fun working with them!!

monday kicks off the new pop-up shop with more fantabulous (yes, that’s a word!) shopkeeps…we’re heading to a place with water, sunset strolls, colorful lights & lots & lots of sugary treats!  any guesses??

// paris adventure

rebecca from loving.living.small is sharing her paris adventure with us today.  i love that she spotted flowers along her travels – i like doing that with doors when i travel!  i think i’ll have to add “spotting flowers” to my list now…portland, get ready! – xo piper

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Ah, Paris. The first stop on our honeymoon had to be Paris. We booked our trip and set off to the City of Lights at the end of April 2012.  Our goal for our entire trip was simple – to enjoy just “being” in Europe. No itineraries, no pre-purchased museum tickets – just open days for embracing the city.

Paris was the perfect spot for this. We strolled through the streets, walked along the winding Siene, discovered sweet patisseries and cheese shops, talked with the locals, ate incredible meals that ranged from fancy sit down dinners to walking while eating a croissant.

Paris is so magical that it sweeps you along with it. The city, the architecture, the history, the romance, the flowers – all inspired me. One afternoon, we ended up in a large park full of flowers. We strolled through the grounds and it was quiet and peaceful even steps from the bustling city streets. We stumbled upon a gorgeous peony section – as my favorite flower – I was thrilled.

For me, I love exploring cities and neighborhoods for inspiration in my home. The lines and colors are often reinterpreted in my own space. (I am now on a big green kick after enjoying all the plants and leaves.) And you don’t have to fly to Paris to get this inspiration (Although I say go for it if you can :) Step outside your door and enjoy your own home, neighborhood and style.

// travel + good meal = bliss!

the paris stories keep coming in – you guys are making me jealous!!  i told my hubby that we need to start traveling to each city that we “feature” – i think that should be part of these pop-up shops!

emily from indie shopography has a great paris story to share… (and i ditto her sentiment…good food + travel = HAPPINESS!) – xo piper
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

A good meal is the catalyst for happiness. It brings people together, gives us all a reason to drink wine, and – to me – is a form of self-expression that I can share with others.

Combine a good meal with something else that is very important to me – travel – you have one happy lady. When I look back on all of my life’s adventures, food is always at the forefront of those memories.

When I think of the years I lived on the Gulf Coast, I specifically remember a trip to New Orleans that resulted in a visit to Mulate’s and a bubbly and insanely delicious dish of Crab au Gratin.

Or a trip to Las Vegas, when it’s not the showgirls and gambling that come to mind, but a night out to a very small and quiet French restaurant frequented by the Rat Pack called Pamplemousse, and their luscious Pasta Fruit de Mer.

A recent trip to Austin is defined by the many fabulous meals that we enjoyed. Most notable of these was a wonderfully simple Tortilla Soup from Guerro’s on South Congress Ave.

And then there’s Paris. Oh, Paris.

I’ve had the opportunity to travel to Paris three times in the past ten years. When I look back on those adventures, as you can imagine, I fondly reminisce on the food.

Macarons, croques monsieur, meringue amandes, fresh sorbet, the best leek and potato soup I have ever had. And, of course, crépes.

On my most recent excursion to Paris, it is certainly the crépe that almost brings me to tears. Or, more specifically, a certain buckwheat crépe filled with cured ham, gruyére cheese, and topped with a fried egg. This bit of French heaven is called a gallette complét.

I recently found myself salivating over the mere thought of this meal, which I shared with a new friend on Rue de Turennes during lunch on a day filled with strolling and shopping, and I knew I had to recreate it.

So, I went online and I found a recipe. The recipe is simple, which is how you know it’s authentic, with no extra frills, as good French cuisine hardly needs to be dressed up. And, finally, I relived the gallette complét. I wasn’t sitting at a cute café sipping cider and people watching, but I swear that if I closed my eyes while chewing the gruyére I was almost there. And almost (and gruyére) is good enough for me. For now. - Emily

// the classics

i asked mariah if she would create a post on paris books…while she was researching, she found out that a crazy amount of classics are set in paris!  makes sense, right?!  the real question is…how many of these have you read??  (i can tick off 2!)

the post & pairing are inspired by shopkeep krista from urbanite jewelry – she’s one of those people who amaze you with what they’re able to do.  besides running her jewelry business, she started a monthly craft market for artists in her area.  yep, she’s inspiring.

so off we go on a literary journey with mariah…xo piper

Paris is full of classics  - classic architecture, classic style, classic art – but did you realize it was home to so many classic novels? It’s true! Lots of the classic bestsellers are based in Paris.

Here are my picks for the best classic novels that have ties to Paris:

  1. Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux : Far beneath the majesty and splendour of the Paris Opera House, hides the Phantom in a shadowy existence. Shamed by his physical appearance and feared by all, the love he holds for his beautiful protégée Christine Daaé is so strong that even her heart cannot resist.
  2. Les Miserables by Victor Hugo is an 1862 French novel by author Victor Hugo that is widely considered one of the greatest novels of the nineteenth century.is the story of ex-convict, Jean Valjean who becomes a force for good in the world, but cannot escape his dark past.
  3. The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas:  When hot-blooded young d’Artagnan comes to Paris to seek his fortune, he finds himself challenged to a duel with not one, but three of the King’s Musketeers. But Athos, Porthos and Aramis are to become his greatest friends, and companions in dangerous adventure when he becomes embroiled in the intrigues of the Court and the beautiful, evil Lady de Winter.
  4. A Moveable Feast by Earnest Hemingway: Published posthumously in 1964, A Moveable Feast remains one of Ernest Hemingway’s most enduring works as he reminisces about his life in Paris in the 1920s and the literary figures he knew
  5. A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens: It was the best of times, it was the worst of times in London and Paris, as economic and political unrest lead to the American and French Revolutions. A story of the courageous Sydney Carton, a man ready to give his life for a woman who will never be his.  With well over 200 million copies sold, it ranks among the most famous works in the history of fictional literature.

Have you read any of these?  Any favorites?   – Mariah

// what’s your favorite flavor?

so today’s post is inspired by the adorably cool ice cream spoons from sucre shop!  make sure to read about brooke and check out her other spoons – her colorful, fun designs seriously make me want to have an ice cream party every week!  (and really who says i can’t?? :)

this is also the perfect time to share some paris stories that you guys have shared with me.  it was funny to see that a lot of the stories revolved around trips to berthillon!!

cathy from fiscally chic shared one with me.  she said that one of the places she insisted on visiting in paris was berthillon – she wanted to try out this world famous ice cream!  while she & her mom enjoyed their yummy raspberry (framboise) & chocolate (chocolat) ice cream respectively, her sister was more adventurous.  and the result??

“We for sure remembered my sister’s order!  My sister ordered the black currant (cassis), and wasn’t expecting such a strong flavor. I think all of the flavors are probably good, people just need to be warned that they’re very intense, and maybe not sugary sweet like in the States!”

that’s so true, isn’t it?  marcus & i had similar experiences with food in australia – different countries, different tastes!  she wrote a great post here about her visit to paris – lots of great photos to check out!

so back to my question…what’s your favorite flavor??  (if i HAD to choose…i’d go with any ice cream that had chocolate & peanut butter!)

// meet simply pretty prints+paris inspired playlist!

happy tuesday!  how was your weekend?  this would have been a monday post…except i woke up monday to find that my computer crashed!  not the best way to kick off the week – but thank god for small miracles, my back up worked!!

today’s pairing is inspired by the featured pop-up shopkeep, simply pretty prints!!  click here to read all about sarah, the artist behind simply pretty prints.   her resume is impressive…she’s got a degree in mechanical engineering for one thing!  but i love that she’s both creative & analytical – makes for a cool combo in her work!!

her french word espresso cups got me thinking about one of my fave things to do…sit in a cafe, drinking coffee, listening to music and just people watching.  when i go to paris, that’s where you’d find me!  (well, not the whole time – i mean i’d go see things too!)

so i asked marcus to create a paris-inspired playlist for us all – it’s pretty fantastic, i’ve got to say!

Hello One Sydney Roadies! Hubby here with some ideas on music.  My own personal fantasy day of Paris is sitting in a cafe with my ipod watching the world go by.  Cafes and music  go hand and hand with me so i put together a paris cafe playlist to just sit, drink coffee and watch both nothing and everything at once. enjoy! - marcus

1/polo - la fee clochette
2/tahiti 80 – heartbeat
3/paris combo – fibre de verre
4/united future organization – good luck shore

today i get to introduce you all to monika, the lovely & charming woman behind splendid willow avenue (have you checked out her blog??  i swear, it transports you away to sweden!  chock full of swedish design & posts that make you smile).  monika and i met through blogging & started chatting once we opened our online shops.  she’s funny, charming and makes you feel like you’ve been friends for years.  her shop, splendid willow avenue, is full of gorgeous swedish products (some that are only available in the states through her site!).  click here to read more about her!

her shop’s gold, sparkly flip flops inspired today’s sightseeing tour along the seine.  thanks to mariah for creating the awesome map & tour – we both were saying that we’ve become a bit obsessed with the map! :)

Paris Walking Tour – Sightseeing along the Seine River

let’s pretend that we’re spending a relaxing afternoon visiting places along the famous Seine river.

Fun Fact: Did you know that in the summertime, the city creates temporary beaches along each side the Siene , sand and palm trees are brought in, and city-dwellers can enjoy lots of fun beachy activities – how much fun would that be? My kinda city.

off we go…

  1. You’ll start at the Pont Neuf, which is the oldest bridge in Paris – it’s 405 years old this year!
  2. Next is the the Conciergerie – a 700 year old former royal palace that had a notorious prison in it during the French Revolution. Marie-Anoinette stayed in this prison before her death.
  3. Now on to the Sainte-Chapelle. It was founded by King St. Louis and the chapel glows with 16 enormous stained-glass windows that illustrate more than a thousand biblical scenes.
  4. Stop by the Marché aux Fleurs – they’ve been selling flowers for around 200 years.
  5. Next is the Notre Dame Cathedral is considered one of the the finest examples of French Gothic architecture in Europe.
  6. Your next stop is the Memorial of the Deportation – a memorial to the people deported to the Nazi concentration camps during the WWII. Inside are 200,000 beads of glass reflecting light in the darkness in remembrance of those who were lost.
  7. Next stop – a cheese shop! La Ferme Saint-Aubin is famous for cheeses in all shapes and sizes from all over the country.
  8. Stop and have a bite to eat at Mon Vieil Ami. It is the acclaimed bistro of superchef Antoine Westermann. “It’s really the restaurant of the isle,” says food critic Patricia Wells.
  9. To finish off your meal, your last stop is at Berthillon – a luxury ice cream and sorbet parlor. Their ice cream is made of all natural ingredients with no preservatives or artificial sweeteners and is considered the best ice cream in the city or in all of France!

have you been to any of these spots?  what did you think?   i’d love to hear what you thought of the seine!
